musings of a NS boy

8.21pm

looking back on the first 2 weeks of NS
i guess its not that bad.
the seargents are still nice,
physical stuff still copable.

cons:

there are of course the bad sides to NS la.
like mainly confinement weeks.
cause its like 14 days.
and the change from a civilian lifestyle
to a military lifestyle's a big jump.
yup so initially the first few days
i really really hated ns life.

its like just the day before
i was leading my carefree lifestyle
master of my own decisions.
i could eat for 2 hours if i wanted to
sleep for 20 hours if i wanted to
disobey anyone i wanted to.
just the next day
i had to eat within 15 mins
sleep for less than 6 hours
and i had to obey the seargents at all cost.

and then you look at the calender
and 14 days seem like eternity.
esp since the days drag by.
it used to be me waking up at 11am every day
then brunch then go out.
i rmb the first day at tekong
woke at 5am.
after a morning's activity
we looked at our watches and we're like
wow almost 7 hours of work done.
but then again wtf it isn't even noon yet.
probably one of the reasons
why the days seemed so draggy.
they really do squeeze out every bit of time.

the other problem is that
i dunno being kinda like a spoilt kid,
NS is really quite degrading.
all your entire being is reduced to a number.
i became Q4409.
quebec platoon 4 section 4 bed 09.
and trust me the first few days
its really annoying when the seargents
keep shouting at you.
its kinda bruising to your ego la.
i mean, i'm not dumb
don't have to shout what.
but then as the days go past
yea you realise that seargents
only know how to shout.
they can't really talk softly.

yea so initially the first few days
i was really really missing my old lifestyle
a lot a lot a lot.
and yea i wrote lotsa stuff down in my journal.
thank god for my journal
i'd probably have lost track of time otherwise.

which brings me to my third point.
tekong is really really
cut off from the rest of the world.
the first week we didn't have any papers at all.
and when they finally did give us papers
the second week,
they gave us the 9th of jan's newsppapers
which was essentially
newspapers for the day we booked in.
which i read alrdy.

i had to rely on sms-ing ppl for outside news.
its really quite bad.
now there's newspapers every few days
its not so bad haha.
we even had a fresh newspaper once.
as in like that day's newspapers.
wow haha the luxury.

and truth be told.
its really kinda hot there
statistically its abt 2 degrees hotter
but it sure feels a lot more.
haha sucks man.
the same sun shines over both us and the mainland
yet it just HAD to shine brighter over at tekong.

pros:

okay la i must say
ns has more pros than cons.
most imptly its the
very very healthy lifestyle.
in the past it used to be
waking up late
brunch
then go out play and slack
dinner eat more junk
more lagging around,
late nights.
now its a lot different.
0530 revelie
0545 exercise (5BX)
0615 breakfast
0645 area cleaning
0730 first parade
then a day of physical activities
like pt or like rifle drills
or useless and funny stuff like fighting
(otherwise known as close combat training)
meals would be errr balanced
and like non fried most of the times
lets not talk abt quality yet.
yea and early lights out at 2230hrs everyday.

the place is really quite good too.
living in the middle of a jungle
and the lack of much vehicles,
we have really crisp and fresh air over there.
i tell you nothing beats doing exercise
early in the fresh and cold morning air at 0545.

and tekong's really quite pretty at night
after the horrendously hot sun has set
and the moon comes up,
its really a sight to rmb.
one clear night sky
one bright and shining moon
one bright venus
and a whole platoon of twinkling stars
its really wow wow wow.
not say a lot a lot of stars like rural china
but still, never thought i'd see this
in singapore territory.
its really really very pretty.
((:

best (and worst) of all
there're a heck lot of commercial planes
flying right above our heads.
like every 5 mins we'll see at least one.
cause we're just beside changi airport
so yea we get to see them just after takeoff.
on one hand,
its really kinda motivating
i don't know why either.
it just is.
on the other hand,
its really quite annoying.
everytime i see them flying overhead
making their turns
and flying off into the rising sun
to exciting and exotic destinations,
i stop and think to myself
what the f*** am i doing here. -.-

and the seargents are still nice
so far la since its the first 2 weeks
can't really say much yet.
but they seem like nice ppl.
as long as you don't step on their toes
should be fine la.
do things their way, do it fast,
and everything will go smoothly.
that's what they said
and that's what i'll believe.
they don't look (or act) like monsters.
trust me there are some
who look like they can't smile for nuts.

rockyhill camp is also quite a homely place
cause its like smack in the middle of the jungle
away from the main camps at ladang.
so yea we got 3 companies there only
and since the commanding officer
has to take a tunnel (lorry) here
he doesn't really come by often.
so we're pretty much left on our own.
quite fun la like 3 companies there
we got the whole compound to ourselves.
minus the military life,
its really quite like a chalet.

2 weeks down,
7 more weeks to go.
i hope i've done enough adapting.
after next week's field camp
by the time i book out again
it'll be 5 more weeks.
i'll be almost half done with my bmt.
maybe 9 weeks isn't so long yet.
(:

because cider is the elixir of life
